Come What May and Love It

by Mrs. Smith on January 3, 2021

So I am 100% sure I wrote a New Year’s Eve post once upon a time, in which I describe how I had a “word” for the year come to me, despite my plans to NOT have anything of the sort.

I KNOW THAT HAPPENED!

IwroteingreatdetailabouthowI’d –
hang on.

whyismyspacebarnotworking????

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

This.is.my.life.right.now.
It.really.is.

1. Have.a.plan.

2. Hit a road block.
(Can’tfindthepost)

3. Take.a.detour.
(Maybe.it’s.on.facebook?)

4. Hitanotheroadblock.
(whatinthefreakingheck,spacebar!)

5. HavespacebarmagicallystartworkingandthenSTOPAGAINwhyyyyyyyyy

6. But hey, you guys — OH MY GOSH, IT’S WORKING AGAIN, NOBODY MOVE!!!!

— In the process of NOT finding that epic writeup, I found that meme I was looking for when the annual “let’s joke about shipping” memes made the rounds after Black Friday.

You’re welcome.

If this post doesn’t basically sum up 2020, I’m not sure what would.

It’s perfect.

But for posterity’s sake (because I’m sure my posterity is going to have nothing better to do than read the thouuuuuuusands and thousands of rambly-words I’m putting out here) —
New Years this year was lovely, and COMPLETELY goal-free.

Nada.

Zip.

Zilch.

No catch phrases. No words. No plans AT ALL.

For the record, the title of this post (Come what may and love it) is my theme-in-hindsight for last year, not some kind of theme-in-advance for this year.

I’m just here. House swapping in Oregon. Breathing. Enjoying the couple weeks we have with my husband here before he goes back to his on-island jobs. Bracing myself for the impact of sorta-single-parenting that will hit when he leaves again this week. (He does a good job being helpful and involved from a distance, bless him.) I’m grateful for the epic visit we had from my parents & brother. Grateful for close proximity to my sister. Grateful for our time in the Northwest. Bewildered at the bizarre shift we’ve experienced in our society in the last 10 months.

Trying to stay grounded and sane, holding on to truths like IF NOBODY TOUCHES THE MICROPHONE, THERE’S NO NEED TO WIPE IT DOWN BETWEEN SPEAKERS. Germs are not fleas, people!!!!!
— And other such inspiring thoughts that came to me during the church meeting I watched on our couch with my family.

Yeah. That’s pretty much it.

In case you were wondering, though, that inspiring thought prompted this conversation:

– MrSmith responds: I’m pretty sure that it’s a requirement from the state for people holding church meetings.
– I yell whisper quietly, “WHAT THE [French for CheeseWiz] IS WRONG WITH THE GOVERNMENT?!?!?!?”
– MrSmith whispers back, “That’s kind of a long answer, don’t you think?”

Good stuff, I tell you what.

Peace out, 2020.

PS: If you happen to remember where I put that post about my word for 2020, pretty please let me know, thanks. It’s in a pen-and-paper journal somewhere, but I *know* it’s out there somewhere digitally, too…

my word for 2020 was “hope.” my word for 2021 is “fight.”

Nice! I’m not a therapist or anything, but that sounds like progress to me!
