“Is it tomorrow now?”

Yes, is was tomorrow. Thursday was, to be specifically, because Wednesday he’d been told a package was coming, “tomorrow.” Sadly, it didn’t come Thursday. Mail is finicky here sometimes, like it’s gotta cross and ocean or something. Tsh. Go figure.

Friday was the day.

A better package has never been sent. A longer post should be written… but… we’re rearranging the furniture and I must needs go help. Why are we rearranging? Because SOMEBODY’S COMING TO VISIT SOON and it seemed like a good excuse to get things all spiffed up. I’m kind of rambling now, so I’ll just get to the pictures already.

What happens when you have company? The blog gets bumped WAY down on the To Do List.

What happens when you feel yourself coming down with a kidney infection?
The blog doesn’t even come up on the radar.

But someday I’ll come back here and write again. I’ve got lots of things bouncing around in my head that would enjoy being put down on paper. Or posts. Or both.

Anyway.
Happy Fall, every one! Thank you for reminding me in your beautiful posts that seasons do happen. In Hawaii we went from hot-with-just-a-slight-breeze to hot-with-trade-winds-again. I’m liking (no, loving) those trade winds, let me tell you… How I missed them… And the sudden downpours. Love those too! Life in the tropics is interesting and wet.

But it doesn’t exactly feel like “autumn” in the traditional sense, so again, thank you. …

Quick! Update post in 10 minutes or less.
C & D are doing fine & riding their bikes everywhere they can.
E is three & acting it this week. (picture me pulling my hair out and him laughing hysterically.)
F escapes the house without clothing &/or shoes at least once a day. Usually more than that, neato little hook&eye latch at the top of our screen door notwithstanding.
G is loosing that curly red hair rapidly, and is still his happy, healthy, normal adorable-baby self.

These pictures are from a few weeks ago and I can’t believe how much different he is now. Bye bye beautiful baby hair! Hello blond peachfuzz. He now looks much more like the other Smithlings did at his age. Sad to see it go, but glad to know the red gene is in there. If my babies don’t all marry into these beautiful Polynesian families, …

Or, in other words, funnest mini-activity ever!

What is a blanched almond?

An almond without it’s brown skin.

Why on earth would you care?

Well, if you were going to make almond milk yourself you’d want the bitter skins off first.

Why go to all that trouble when you can just *buy* almond milk at the store?

Because:
1) it’s cheaper this way, I think, and mostly
2) shopping for that sort of thing means 2 hours of driving, but also,
3) just to see if I can.

I’ll let you know how it goes.

So. First you blanch them.

How to Blanch Your Almonds

Step 1, boil some water.

Step 2, throw your almonds in it for ONE MINUTE.

Much longer than that and you’ll have soft almonds. Not that I cared, because I’m doing this with almond-milk in mind, but just so you know: If you want your …

I’d be no kind of blogger if I didn’t write a little bit about how well we’re getting along in our new digs. One of our good friends here had a neighborhood pot luck last Friday. There were so many people there! It was a nice way to get to know folks there, and we really enjoyed ourselves. Here we are on our way in.

And now to share something that makes me giggle every time I think of it.

Our kids were running around with the other 200 kids there. (Okay, so it was more like 30, not 200. Still. That’s a lot of kids.)
Mr. Smith came back with this commentary:

“They’re all playing Harry Potter, waving their wands around at each other, ‘Wingardium leviosa!’ and the like,” then he chuckles, “Our kids don’t know it, so they have no idea what they’re doing.”

It came! It was wonderful!
I loved having family all together, which is probably my favorite side-effect of a wedding. Although we wouldn’t have wanted to have a wedding and our big move happening right on top of each other, it’s working out for the best. It’s certainly been a huge blessing to be able to see all these dear, dear family members before we move across the ocean.

My pictures really aren’t all that wonderful, but that’s what the photographer was for.

Congratulations Auntie Lou and Uncle Mark!
We love you.

PS: We found out last week where we’ll be living in Hawaii. It’s perfect and I’m so grateful.

Sunday: Mr. Smith & I fly out with Freedom & little Gentleman so John can make it to a business conference there Mon-Wed.

In my opinion, the greatest enemy to the happily-ever-after of all married couples and of families in general is pornography. There are many (many!) other things, to be sure, but pornography can blow a crater in your life that is not easily repaired — especially because those who have a problem with it seldom recognize that they do.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure… I found this article timely and helpful for those trying to keep their families safe through the use of internet filters.

I love the feeling there, even when the kids are a little squirrely, and even when the toddler wouldn’t leave the reflection pool alone.

With it being a beautiful Monday evening, I expected to see more families. The place was practically empty! I guess the crowds only show up for Family Night when the Christmas lights are up. Personally, I like it better there in the spring/summer, and we enjoyed a perfect, windy evening there. We almost didn’t go, but I’m glad we did. The exhibits are wonderful and the grounds are beautiful. If my camera batteries weren’t aaaaaaalmost dead that night, I would’ve taken 100 pictures.

It’s one place I know I’ll get comments about our large, young family — Nice, happy comments about what a lovely family & how lucky blessed we are, and not as many of the heads shaking, “I’m glad it’s …
