Random Thoughts of Happiness

by Mrs. Smith on June 29, 2011

He likes the park nearby.

Why so happy?

BECAUSE THEY’RE ALL COMING HOME TOMORROW!

I don’t normally resort to all-caps, but that’s how I feel.  It’s been a week and a half since the whole family was together, and back then we were in crazy limbo-land mode.  Mr. Smith and the Big Three are going to be here soon and we’ll begin establishing properly our new Smithtopia here in paradise.

He was telling me all about it in his funny little "language."

I really do love it here, in case you were wondering.  It’s not just  the beautiful scenery – though that doesn’t hurt, and it’s not the weather – though I generally like that too.  It’s most definitely not the bugs – ewwwwwwwww icky.  It’s the culture here I really love.  It’s the many, many different colors and shapes and sizes, and the society that embraces all of theml.  Most of the time.  I hear there is a little anti-white streak that comes out now and again, but I haven’t seen it much yet.  From what I hear, if they can see you love them, they’ll love you right back.

It’s all over the island, but especially around BYU-Hawaii.  There are students here from absolutely everywhere.  The variety is… what’s the word… shocking isn’t the right word, because I love it.  Refreshing!  Yes!  It’s refreshing in so many ways for the whitey coming from Utah, land of sameness.

The laid-back attitude is endearing, too.  I was afraid it would breed laziness, but so far I haven’t seen that.  It surprised me a little, but there’s a strong undercurrent of work hard, play hard, sleep well.  It’s easy to play hard because the world is so beautiful.  It’s easy to work hard because the cost of living here demands it.  It’s easy to sleep well…

Well, okay.  It isn’t yet.  But it will be once I get used to this cursed wonderful humidity.

I called it “laid back,” but that’s not exactly the right term.  The right term was spoken by my native Hawaiian neighbor who I met this afternoon.  Freedom has been trying to get away with playing w/ their little scooter thing (instead of his own, just like it, 20 ft away), and so I made some sort of apology about it.

“No worries,” he said.

That’s what it is.  No worries.  Slow to be offended, quick to forgive.  Slow to hate, quick to love.  Slow to judge, quick to help.

Yes, I like it here a lot, and I can’t wait for the kids to come and fall in love with the place too.  Are they here yet, are they here yet, are they here yet????
