Confessions from a Garage-Saler.

Guess what we did last yesterday.

I had the kids all help me gather the donation bags, boxes, and piles that have been growing ’round here as of late.  I even shamelessly bribed them to add to the small mountain of outgoing junk.

“Anyone who finds more things to give away gets a WHOLE DIME to spend at garage sales today.”

Now, I don’t recommend bribing, I don’t recommend giving small children money, and I don’t recommend garage-sale-ing when you’re trying to streamline.  So I guess that makes me a big, fat hypocrite, eh?  I have excuses, I do.  Especially for that last one… Let me explain…

Yes, I’m a garage-saler.  I love it.  You just can’t beat these prices.  Friday, for example, I bought Doodle a beautiful winter coat for the ’10-11 season for all of $2.  He’s going to be so warm and cozy!  And one for me, too.  Super long sleeves… heaven…

And there was the nice, sturdy, table-top-type fan for $1.  Woohoo! Now Mommy and Daddy won’t roast this summer!   (This model would’ve been at least $15 at a store, and the newer models don’t seem to be made so sturdy as these older ones.)

That was my first time garage-saleing with all four kids – taking them out of the car and everything.  Know what?  It was fun!  C made out like a bandit, D had a great time, E didn’t break anything, and F slept through most of it.  Can’t ask much more from four small kids.

Talking about this with the mastermind behind Our Simple Life, she gave me a fabulous idea.

I can go sale-ing with our digital camera & take pictures of the crazy things we see!  Woo-hooo!  Won’t that make a great feature for a blog???!  I’m just a wee bit excited about it.

Can we say funky?

Can’t see it here, but those shoes were wild.

One of my favorite almost-free finds was these shorts for C just in time for summer.

Cute little shorts!

There’s more to the garage-sale-adventure story, but it’ll wait until Monday.
Have a nice weekend everyone!

I used to be a garage sale addict until we moved too far out of town and then I couldn’t force myself to take the drive. We always found the best deals on stuff we really needed! Yes, sometimes I bought stuff we didn’t need but I learned and I would be a lot better these days if I were to ever go again.

Way to get that stuff out of your house!

I believe in bribing my children, although I call it ‘rewarding them for good behavior.’ Does that make me a bad mother?

Kudos for braving the sales with four. I did that once, to one that was in walking distance . . . and going home is one of my very worst memories. I’ll leave it at that.

That's a very good question.
I am happy to hear from you, thrilled to hear from you!, but I am also content to have you drop by, read a little, laugh a little, and move on quietly to whatever else you have to do. This is a guilt-free blog. ;)

Just a Reminder…

The Church is not a place where perfect people gather to say perfect things, or have perfect thoughts, or have perfect feelings. The Church is a place where imperfect people gather to provide encouragement, support, and service to each other as we press on in our journey to return to our Heavenly Father. ~Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin, (May 2005 Ensign)

Why I Try

God expects you to have enough faith and determination and enough trust in Him to keep moving, keep living, keep rejoicing. In fact, He expects you not simply to face the future (that sounds pretty grim and stoic); He expects you to embrace and shape the future - to love it and rejoice in it and delight in your opportunities. God is anxiously waiting for the chance to answer your prayers, and fulfill your dreams, just as He always has. But He can't if you don't pray, and He can't if you don't dream. In short, He can't if you don't believe.

~Jeffrey R. Holland, "This, the Greatest of All Dispensations"

"It is not for you to be led by the women of the world; it is for you to lead the...women of the world, in everything that is praise-worthy, everything that is God-like, everything that is uplifting and... purifying to the children of men." Joseph F. Smith, in this talk by Elder Ballard
