The Fall of the Red Curtain
I’ve been excited about writing this update for at least a week now. (Turns out last week was the busiest we’ve had in a LONG time, with the least amount of “recharge” time for this rather outgoing introvert.)
Here’s the story.
We have an almost-100-year-old house. All old houses are funky in their own way, and ours is no exception. Maybe that’s why we feel so at home here.
It starts with our two front doors. Yep, we have two of them. Then when you go in the front door (the one that isn’t blocked by a couch), our front room has three other doorways leading from it. One goes to the play room, one to the office/library/disaster room, and the other goes into the kitchen.
Once upon a time….
I hung a red velvet curtain in that doorway to the kitchen.
I claimed it was a way to save on heating costs during the winter.
When we had a 1940′s, gas-guzzling tank of a furnace, we used a much more energy-efficient space heater to heat the downstairs. The curtain made heating whichever room we were in much faster.
Riiiiight.
That was the excuse, anyway.
Really, its primary function was to keep company from seeing my messy kitchen when they came in the front door. (Which is why it stayed up even in the summer, even in the winter after we upgraded the furnace.)
But then recently…
The hanging rod for said curtain hit the end of its warranty period and kids kept knocking it down. I hate that, but dealt with it anyway until I realized something exciting.
I don’t need to hide my kitchen anymore!
So the curtain came down.
… And we all lived happily ever after.
Someday I might even be able to unlock the door to the office/library/disaster room, be still my empty-space-loving heart.
Maybe.

Wow! Good riddance red curtain!
Friend, you are making my heart happy! Can you even believe how wonderful it feels to live this way? Hurray for you!
That’s so cool! Congrats on your clean kitchen!
I have no idea how I found your blog. Maybe from the Lazy Organizer? Maybe from a search I did. Not sure. But I’m really enjoying your writings! I also have been deep cleaning and dejunking my house as of late. It’s liberating!
Thanks! It’s always nice to meet someone new here. I’m so glad you left a note!
I can’t wait to see!!
