Simple, Happy Days

January 2, 2009

It’s been a good day.  Nothing spectacular to report – just a simple, happy day.

My kids were happy when they weren’t whining and pining over something they couldn’t have/do, they were having a great time playing together when they weren’t fighting over something (like that rooster flashlight), and they were charming and polite when they weren’t fussy. (in other words, a normal day) - the boys both napped, though not at the same time – Cinderella worked some on her reading chart (only 12 more stickers to the SuperWhy party, folks!  Yay!) – we painted our fingernails and read more books – this morning I talked on the phone for an hour or so with Secret Agent Zenobia (wink), and went out on a quick date with my Sweetheart when the kids were at the Tolleys (YAY for babysitting trade-offs!!!!!!!).  The world is getting a fresh coat of whiteness now, reminding us all that it’s still winter out there.

Today is the kind of day I wish every day could be.  Kids learning, me and John being productive, and BEST OF ALL – the baby didn’t wake me up last night until probably 3:30 or 4… maybe even later.  Yes, that’s probably what made today so fabulous in such a subtle, happy way.

Yesterday, however, was funny.  We actually had some friends over for dinner/movie (something we rarely ever do since I’m terrified of anyone seeing my messy house – yes, that includes you) – and just as the oven is preheated and we decide it’s a better idea to eat before starting Prince Caspian, the power goes out.  Lovely.  Not the whole house, mind you, and not even a certain section of the house.  We had almost all the overhead lights, a few outlets here and there – but not the fridge or oven – lights in the laundry room, but not the phone… It was weird.  Weird in that “ACK!  Now what’re we going to eat?!” sort of way.

John messed around with all the breakers and fuses, but couldn’t figure it out.  This is New Years day, so we held off calling someone as long as we could.  Eventually, however, someone got back to us and solved the problem.  (Sort of.  The 220 appliances -oven & dryer- still don’t work.)  In the mean time, I break into the freeze dried food storage (yes!  I love any excuse to do that!  it’s so, so yummy and so, so easy!) and we eat.

As the electrician guy from the city finishes up and we start serving dessert, John gets paged & has to work.  Again, Lovely.  Fortunately he was done by the time the rest of us were licking our pie and ice cream plates clean, and we were able to watch Caspian with only minor interruptions from screaming, tired children.

It was such a funny evening!  Thankfully, our guests were super-cool about everything.  They might even come back again some day, if we promise we’re having the pizzas delivered.  ;)

Sounds like such a nice day! And that is a funny story about the power going out when you have guests over and dinner ready to be cooked. Of COURSE it has to happen right then! Happy New Year!!!

That's a very good question.
I am happy to hear from you, thrilled to hear from you!, but I am also content to have you drop by, read a little, laugh a little, and move on quietly to whatever else you have to do. This is a guilt-free blog. ;)

Just a Reminder…

The Church is not a place where perfect people gather to say perfect things, or have perfect thoughts, or have perfect feelings. The Church is a place where imperfect people gather to provide encouragement, support, and service to each other as we press on in our journey to return to our Heavenly Father. ~Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin, (May 2005 Ensign)

Why I Try

God expects you to have enough faith and determination and enough trust in Him to keep moving, keep living, keep rejoicing. In fact, He expects you not simply to face the future (that sounds pretty grim and stoic); He expects you to embrace and shape the future - to love it and rejoice in it and delight in your opportunities. God is anxiously waiting for the chance to answer your prayers, and fulfill your dreams, just as He always has. But He can't if you don't pray, and He can't if you don't dream. In short, He can't if you don't believe.
